Danelaw Activities

Activities

Join us in celebrating our cousins south of the Danelaw with La Serrana de la Vera, set in 16th-century Spain. We’ll have heavy and rapier fighting, a delicious feast, dancing, and revelry. Of special note is our sponsored Scroll Competition! We round out the day with an interesting selection of classes and activities for your enjoyment.

A&S Workshops

Open workshops in Fingerloop Braiding, Blackwork, and Scriptorium on the field.

Sponsored Scroll Competition

The Scribes of Bryn Madoc are excited to announce a Scribal Challenge at Danelaw 2023!
There are three categories for this event, each being the best depiction / interpretation / use of:

  • St. George & the Dragon, sponsored by Capitán Rodrigo Luis de Alburquerque
  • Nautical (no standalone oars), sponsored by Banbharun Derbail inghean
    Conchobar
  • Shinies, Shimmers, & Jewels, sponsored by Master AEdward of Glastonburh

From all entries, Their Excellencies Knut and Simon will select a scroll for their Barons’ Choice.

As this is an in-person challenge, submissions must be on site for entry, but you yourself do not need to be present at the event. Calligraphy is not required on entries. Please keep all submission dimensions to standard frame sizes. All pieces submitted to the challenge will be collected for the Barony’s Scribal Case — thank you for the gift of your work! Please contact Lijsbet die Wolff (Logan Van Hagen) with any questions.

Armored Combat

10 a.m.
Armor inspection

11 a.m.
URG Armored Tournament
Format: Open to women, nonbinary, and trans armored combatents. Format will be double elimination or round robin, depending on attendance.

1 p.m.
Age Before Beauty Melee
Format: In Honor of Sir Fiachna, here are some complicated rules:
There are two teams: Under 50, Over 50. That dividing age will be adjusted to make team numbers even. Aditionally, both Peers and Royal Peers will be divided evenly between the two teams by age (not necessarily the same dividing age, just even numbers). Peers will get one “life.” The non-Peer members of each team will have an unlimited number of resurrections UNTIL all Peers have been eliminated, at which point a brief hold will be called and all the remaining fighters will have one more “life.” The melee will proceed as usual, until one team prevails.

2 p.m.
Bryn Madoc vs. the World Melee
Format: Traditional melee, EXCEPT — Team Madoc will consist of everyone who has ever been a member of Bryn Madoc. The People’s Barony loves her folks — “You can check out, but . . .”

3 p.m.
Weird Warlord Melee
Format: Warlord melee, a Lemans start where individuals in a ring run to a pile of shields and weapons in the middle of the circle. Losers of bouts join the army of the victor(s); EXCEPT — the weapons and shields put into the start-up pile can not include anything you’ve used in the last three events (MGT excepted). Combat proceeds until one army prevails.

Rapier Combat

10 a.m.
Armor inspection

11 a.m.
URG Rapier Tournament
Format: Open to women, nonbinary, and trans fencers. Format will be double elimination or round robin, depending on attendance. Bouts may be fought using any legal rapier equipment, and may be cut and thrust by the agreement of the fencers.

1 p.m.
Three-Person Team Relay Tournament
Format: Relay style — single elimination team tournament. Each match features the three fencers on each team competing in a round robin, with 9 two-minute bouts to 3 points. The winning team is the one that reaches 27 total points first or is leading after the end of the nine bouts. Each 3-point bout may be fought cut and thrust by the agreement of the fencers, but no delays for equipment changes beyond weapons will be permitted given schedule restrictions.

3 p.m.
Three-Person Team Melee Tournament
Format: Fought round robin or in a double elimination format depending on the number of teams present. Teams are composed of three fencers, having no more than one MoD per team. Teams will be permitted one spear each in this event. This will be fought as a team deathmatch format, with the winning side eliminating all of the opposing team’s fencers. Obligate standard rapier rules.
