About Us

In the summer of Anno Societatis XI, (1976), during the reign of Prince Francois Duvant, five like-minded friends attending the University of Georgia in Athens met together and formed the Shire of Bryn Madoc.

And the names of the Five Founders are remembered: Dylan ab Aneirin, Margala of Dovedale, Ædward of Glastonburh, Domenica Farnese, and Lionel Hildebrand. These founders chose the Hall of Memory (Memorial Hall) in the Universitas Atheneum as their gathering place for folk-moots. In that year, the shire held their first event, a covered-trencher supper. The following spring, Stonehew Hrafnusson became Bryn Madoc’s first armored fighter to enter a tournament, at the Atenveldt Warlord Tourney.

The Barony of Bryn Madoc is located in Athens, GA in the Kingdom of Meridies. Our several lands also extend into Jefferson, Commerce, Watkinsville, Monroe, Winder, GA, and points in-between. We are part of the Kingdom of Meridies, which includes Alabama, Georgia, the Panhandle of Florida, and east Tennessee.

We have local meetings and activities, which are run by the group officers, but our primary historical re-creation activities are events. We focus on re-creating the atmosphere of a day at a royal tournament, a medieval festival, or a medieval battle.  Events may include tournaments, craft competitions, classes on topics of interest, Royal Court (where awards are given), dancing, singing, and of course sumptuous candle-lit feasts!

Members range across all ages, and include students, families with small children, as well as those who have been in the SCA for many years.

Members share common interests: armored combat, fencing, archery, cooking, dancing, costumining, music, metalwork, woodwork, and so much more. There is, literally, something for everyone!

We look forward to sharing our hospitality, telling stories, recreating the Middle Ages as they should have been.
